OMG! Liking the characters so far, but the former educator in me is cringing as I read these sentences. You don’t need “had” before every other verb.
“I had turned.”
“She had plastered.”
“She had scrambled.”
“I had grabbed.”
“I had rolled.”
“She had tried to paw at my chest.”
