A lot has happened with Ponyboy and the gang. Dally, Ponyboy, and Johnny ended up getting in the middle of a fire. Dally and Ponyboy weren't hurt too bad, but Johnny was in critical condition. People have found out what Johnny did, but the three boys didn't get in trouble because they were heroes in the fire. Things seem to go back to normal for a while, and most of the gang is getting ready for a rumble.

Johnny and Ponyboy decide to go to the movies, where they meet two girls named Cherry and Martia. They become friends. After the movie, Johnny and Ponyboy get into some trouble with the socs. They tell Dally about it and he helps them out to get them away from anyone who would turn them in for the crime that was committed. Johnny, Dally, and Ponyboy try to keep where they are a secret from the rest of the gang.

So far, The Outsiders has introduced the main characters and supporting characters. Ponyboy Curtis is the main character who is very book-smart, but not so street-smart. He has two brothers who couldn't be much different from each other: Darry and Sodapop. The three of them are sort of in a gang with others of their poor kind.
