Like some exotic songbird laying its precious golden eggs, the reclusive and brilliant author Donna Tartt only pops out a new book every decade or so. This summer I've decided to treat myself to the last of her three novels that I have not read. Already I'm engulfed by her dark, incandescent prose, haunted by the memory of the dead Cleves child and the way we rewrite our histories in the act of remembrance.
