...Mr. Emerson's son (we don't know the name of) is telling the protagonist that he won't get him an appointment with his father because he's "looking out for his best interest" because he thinks his dad would never accept a black man...

"...Some of the finest people I know are Neg-Well, you see, Mr. Emerson is my father." (Ellison 180)
This is a perfect example of subtle racism. This goes on so much in today's society and this is where racism is most seen today.

"He was like a formless white drag, suddenly appeared before me, a death which had been there all the time and which had now revealed itself in the madness of the Golden Day." (Ellison 86)
I love the figurative language in this quote. He's saying that Mr. Norton was always death and his looks were deceiving because he was so polite. And he only revealed his true self at the Golden Day when he was close to death
