...And then he goes on to explain that he's a friend of black People and he's always doing what's right. And this is identical to what we see today. People who pretend to be "color blind" but are only racist in the process of doing so.

...Mr. Emerson's son (we don't know the name of) is telling the protagonist that he won't get him an appointment with his father because he's "looking out for his best interest" because he thinks his dad would never accept a black man...

This is a perfect example of subtle racism. This goes on so much in today's society and this is where racism is most seen today.

I love the figurative language in this quote. He's saying that Mr. Norton was always death and his looks were deceiving because he was so polite. And he only revealed his true self at the Golden Day when he was close to death
