Last update before review--- p.107 "You think the thing you call consciousness is some mysterious gift from the heavens, but in the end consciousness is nothing but the context in which your thinking occurs. Consciousness is the feel of accessing memory."

p. 98 "...the world does not pass through me. It lingers. I am in it and it is in me. I am the means by which the universe has come to know itself. I am the thing no machine can ever make. I am meaning."

(finished, but will post a few updates before review)---
from p. 83 " "I'm going to power down now. But my sensors will remain active. So you only have to say, if you want to talk. It's getting better, don't you think? You don't hate me as much as yesterday, do you?" "

This book is amazing... from p. 32: "...it was unreasonable for him to take it upon himself to make such a decision on behalf of the nation. He was no expert in virology. Nevertheless, I believe those who feel the urge to understand Adam's heroism instinctively understand the importance of empathy."

Loving this book! from p. 12: "What we do know is that Adam was born into the Philosopher class. At the end of his first year, he underwent the normal physiological testing and had his genome read. His learning status was confirmed but a warning was placed on his file. At least two genetic markers flagged a possible unpredictability in his behavior."

Jim Thanks, Catie and Ron! Now I just have to figure out how to review this masterpiece...

And maybe I should ask myself why I love books that are so difficult to review!?

Rachel Hartman Because you like a challenge! That sounds pretty normal to me.

Jim Well said, Rachel. I DO like a challenge of a certain sort - such as thinking about whether machines can think, and maybe think a lot better than we do.

I do NOT like challenges of a different sort - such as understanding how to actually listen to current arguments from the all-knowing right. Images of Paul Ryan and Eric Cantor make me ill.

The first is fun. The second is a headache that does not go away. Want to come back and vote this fall?!

On a happier note, I am seeing a lot of great reviews of your book!! Can't wait to get my copy.:)

Rachel Hartman We still get to vote absentee in national elections! We're dual citizens.

Not long til the book comes out. I do worry, vaguely, that the good reviews will get everyone's expectations up impossibly high, but it's possible I just need something to worry about. :)

Now that just made my day, right there!

I completely understand your anxiety, and would probably feel the same in your place. But, having spent much of the past week on various aspects of drama-lama land, I can say with utmost confidence that you are in extremely good position, with exactly the right attitude.

But if you really want something else to worry about (I do NOT advise this), there are plenty of options.
