Character development is oddly lacking in the first portion of the story, with parent issues and mental health sucking up the whole of it. But at about the 30% mark, just as I was asking myself if I could abandon it, the whole thing woke up. Courageous stuff, the dissociative disorder and watching the marriage come unstuck. Did Anna marry her dad all over again? Did Paul marry his mother?

The central thread here is riveting. Note to anyone involved with the publication: "Pike's Place Market" should be changed to omit the apostrophe and the letter s. Pike Place Market is correct.

"Everyone has their own way of being brave," Sister Rosa says. And oh my my my, we learn more about Margaret, and we wonder how many more must be in there, maybe for a good long while. This story could be the 21st century's answer to Sybil.

Ohhh, all is so not well. Nora is an unreliable narrator, and the task for the reader is to tease out what is real, and what is part of her mental illness.

I like the way she depicts Nora's mental health challenges generally, and the dialogue in the psychiatrist's office (but where are we going with abortion?) Time gets away from her, makes her unreliable.
Trends in writing: why does everyone jump on the pulling-my-hair-out bandwagon at once? This author doesn't bother me more than any other, but I think I've read 4 or 5 of these this year, and none before.
