Yeah...the urban-fantasy and the cosmic-horror elements just aren't meshing as well as the author wants them to. They could -- they CAN -- but he doesn't know how to do it here.

Uh...huh. So Gozer the Gozerian exists. And gods from Tolkien's work? This book is losing me rapidly... That sort of metafictional flourish works better if it's actually relevant to the plot or introduced earlier on. But it's not, and it wasn't. :(

So...it's getting a sort of "American Gods" + "Amber" feel.

Yeah, the problem here is that I just don't care about anyone's story except for "Rob's". Not the circus, not the bloggers, etc. Le sigh.

It's never a good sign when I find myself spacing out and missing whole chapters because I'm just reading the words out of a sense of obligation.

That was a LONG intro... Entertaining, but it's nice to finally be at the first real chapter of the actual narrative.
