And reading this book now and seeing the dedication to Cashore's aunts and the role aunt magnolia plays in this story makes me grateful to have had my aunt (Linda) at all. But also so sad that she isn't around for me to share this strange circuitous moment with.

That was the start of a bad time for me--bad years actually--and it started a few days later when my family found out my favorite aunt had suffered a stroke that would prove fatal--something I didn't know when I kept calling and calling to tell her about that job interview and ask her advice on what to wear and to practice questions.

I first heard about this book four years ago when I was interviewing for a marketing position I was wildly unqualified for at Penguin. The then head of school and library marketing asked me about books and we started talking about a few. Including the new contemporary-ish novel Kristin Cashore was writing.

I loved this book. It's perfect and everything I want. Thoughtfully inclusive and all-encompassing. I like that sometimes Ivy and Jane have romantic love and sometimes it might be a bosom friendship. I love the genre play. It was everything I hoped for.
