Will and Umar save the rest of their friends from excecution. Erak pays a ransom to Araluen as a thanks for saving him. I think this novel can connect to Roll of Thunder because one small thing is taken way to far and people end up dying because of it.

Will has just overcome a small force of three soldiers and still managed to shoot down the executioner just in time to save Halt. After the executioner is killed, battle breaks out on the execution deck. This part of the story is exactly like a movie called Pirates of the Caribbean. The pirate is about to be hung but a blacksmith on the Pirate's side throws a sword into the wood, giving him a surface to stand on.

Halt is in the middle of an amazing wedding when a huge Skandian shows up asking to see Will. The Skandian immediately explains an entire story about how Erak was captured and he needs a ransom to get him out of prison. I believe that the theme of this story is to show that friendship is more important than a few risks in life. Duncan doesn't want to send his daughter to save Erak, for it is dangerous.
