On page 156, Goldstien's book talks about "The Machine". I think that he is referring to a computer because he is using it in context to Big Brother limiting technologies that would make the lives of the proles and members of the party easier and perhaps gain intelligence. He also talks about this machine eliminating the need for "human drudgery".

On page 44, when Winston ate his lunch, he and everyone else were forced to take a pill before they eat. The party can't just be randomly making them take this pill, so the pill either makes the food bearable and the food is used for brain damage and mind control, or the pill itself is used for mind control.
