Dr Murray being furious because they missed a word in the dictionary ’bondmaid’ the first slip Esme ever found under the sorting table as a child.

ESME GETTING HER OWN DESK!!!! With the pale green wallpaper with little yellow flowers on it under the lid and all her supplies to work in the scrippy!

Da & Esme discuss how she wants to be an editor & she doesn’t want to get married as that would prevent her from achieving her goal. Cause she’ll have to look after babies & cook all day. Mr Sweatman asks Esme why not aim to become an editor if she won’t get married. Her response because I’m a girl, so? Sweatman says. Mr Sweatman & her Da agree she can be their assistant.

Liz finding out Esme broke the hat pin. Esme getting her monthlies & it being an awkward encounter for her father & the big deal of Esme taking slips & the scriptorium no longer being her safe space. Plus Esme embarking on a new journey to go to Scotland.

Esme bending the pin hat of Lizzie’s mum and putting it on the floor is awful.

Esmes dad just found out she’s been pocketing words.

So far a good foundation of world building. I like Esme’s character she’s highly intelligent but her softness makes her a more realistic 10 year old. I’m interested to learn more about her mother’s tragic death. There’s a lot of female characters that are clearly going to show the variety of roles women had in those times e.g Lizzie & her sisters being in the service & Edith is going to be a suffragette.
