He also probably knew she was going for the key. He definitely figured it out when she was so desperate to get out of the palace. And as soon as he woke up and saw the key was gone, he put his plan into motion, and there are no guards because it's a trap within a trap.

I should have posted this forever ago, but why did Dax not notice that essie was missing...he literally said she wouldn't betray him like that... did he not see that Essie didn't come home with them? He's the one *double finger tap* not paying attention.
