i feel like there's a tendency to say Milady is treated badly, and that's not wrong, but she's really not a well drawn character at all, like cartoonishly evil. maybe I'll change my mind by the end, but I doubt it

Well, that's reprehensible, but it doesn't land hard because the premise of the whole scene is so unbelievable. No matter how dark, she should know his voice at this point. And it's so weird the text acknowledges the problem with his treatment of Kitty but is more worried about the reader thinking he's unmanly for accepting expensive gifts from a woman.

I will grudgingly accept a bit of plot armor for the heroes, but now some random guy d'Artagnan stabbed 4 times and left in the woods (away from the road) with his valet tied to a tree a month earlier is "still very weak, having lost almost all his blood", but alive.All four of the heroes have either been shot or taken sword wounds at this point, but I guess that magic balm recipe d'Artagnan's mother gave him must be so good he doesn't even need to be there to share it with them.

They all must have REALLY strong immune systems, plus a few extra gallons of blood to spare.
