They make speeches and they go on their journey back to the Emerald City. Boy will the wizard be surprised.

They clean his clothes, sew them up, and stuff them with straw. He is back to normal. After a few days of living in freedom, they all vow to set off to see the wizard. The winkies gave them wonderful farewell gifts: golden collars for Toto and the lion, a beautiful bracelet for Dorothy, a walking stick with a golden head for the scarecrow, and a golden oil can for the tinman. Dorothy decides to wear the golden cap.

Some tinsmiths get to work taking out his dents and making a golden ax head for a new wooden handle. It took three days and four nights to fix him up. He has a few patches but he is not vain. He and the others cry tears of joy. Now they must rescue the scarecrow. The winkies join them in their search and find the tree that holds the clothing. The tinman chops the tree and after it falls they figrab his clothing.

Ch. 13 Dorothy frees the lion and then they assemble the winkies to tell them they are free. They celebrate with a feast and dancing, a holiday which they celebrate every year from this day forward. During the party, Dorothy and the lion wonder if they can rescue their friends. The winkies are all glad to help. They search the area and find the tinman on the rocks. Wait. C3PO!!!! They carry him back with broken bits.

Dorothy has no idea that water would melt the witch like brown sugar and she is frightened at watching the woman melt away. Dorothy runs to the lkoion and tells him that they are free.

Sjhe watches Dorothy carefully to see if she takes her shoes off but she never does except at night or when bathing. She is too afraid of water to steal her shoes then. The witch puts an invisible iron bar in the kitchen and the girl trips. The witch snatches one shoe and puts it on her foot. Dorothy asks for it back. The witch refuses. Dorothy is so angry she throws a bucket of water on her. We know what happens.

Every night Dorothy brought food to the lion and she and Toto sleep with him every night and plot their escape. It is hard because the yellow winkie guards are stationed everywhere. The witch often threatens to beat her with an umbrella and she is afraid because she doesn’t know the power of the kiss. Toto bit the witch once and the witch has no blood. There is only one thing she fears: water.

She looks in Dorothy’s eyes and realizes the girl is innocent aand knows nothing of the shoes’ power. She decides to make her a slave and find a way to steal her shoes. She puts Doprothy to work in the kitchen. Dorothy works hard for she is glad that Dorothy and Toto are allowed to live. The witch tries to harness the lion but he is too wild. She puts him in a cage and tells him that he will not eat until he obeys.

She puts the golden cap on her head and says a ridiculous spell. Suddenly winged monkeys fill the skies and the largest one reminds the witch it is the third time and asks her will. She says to capture the lion which she wants to harness and enslave and kill the others. They carry off the tinman and drop him on rocks. They take apart the scarecrow and throw his clothes on the top of the tree.

She gave the winkies spears to destroy the group. They are obedient, but not brave. The lion roared at them; they ran back to the castle. She beat them and sent them back to work. The witch has lost all her assets and has only one left: the golden cap. A person can only use it three times to call forth the winged monkeys to do her will. She used it to enslave the winkies and to run the wizard out of her land.
