Lately, we've learned about the history of the Peculiar children and how they ended up with Miss Peregrine. We also learned about Emma, and how she was thankful that she had found her real family, the Peculiar children, and Miss Peregrine. We always knew that Emma was strong, with her fiery temper and how she handled being in dangerous situations. But we see how hard it was for her, and how strong she must be.

Spoiler Alert! Previously, Jacob and the group of Peculiar children have made friends with the Gypsies and have even found another Peculiar among them. But on their way to freedom and to London on a train, they were captured by Wights. Horace has shown that he is more than what he seems to be by lying to their captors even with all the pressure on himself. The Peculiar children are in trouble so far.

Along with learning that the hollows have evolved and are able to enter Loops, Jacob has just discovered his new ability to sense Hollows and Wights and tune into where they are and what they are doing and has saved the other Peculiar Children with Bronwyn so far.

At this point in the book, Jacob and the rest of the Peculiars have left the island and gone for the mainland. Everyone is exhausted and Jacob admits that the group hadn't thought about what would happen after they made it this far. But it shows the characters' resilience and passion, and how much they care for each other. Bronwyn was more concerned for Olive than she was for herself, and that shows how close she is.
