In the final book - The Chessmen of Mars - John Carter's headstrong daughter Thuvia is flung far from her comfortable life in Helium and into an adventure of her own. With a prince-in-disguise and a bodiless brain as her companions, she is on a quest with a single-minded objective: to get herself home.

It's interesting that the female characters in "John Carter" are more interesting than those in "Tarzan," even though Carter predates Tarzan...

Having made it through two novels of Tarzan and now one novel of John Carter, I can safely assert that ERB has an unusual fascination with making his characters (male and female) walk around naked. Seriously, John Carter doesn't wear more than a silk body wrap for the entirety of "Princess of Mars," and that only during the night.
