"Low-road" buildings invite adaptation and experimentation. They are unpretentious and re appropriated often. Think garages, workshops and lofts. "High-road" buildings are prestigious and carefully tended over generations with respect for their original functions or history. Tweaks here and there, sometimes generational in time spans. Churches, libraries, historic homes.

They be foreseen by the designer, but knowing it will be adapted can encourage good decisions, and keep a planner focused on activity (and adaptation) rather than style or appearances.
