For St. Pats I figured I’d read some classic Irish lit. I think I’ll pick it up again next year.

Eveline: 4/5
Beautiful and dark. Her heart was broken long before she broke his.

After the Race: 2/5
Fun look at a 1920s rich boy acting like a rich boy, but no real point.

Two Gallants: 2/5
Not so fun look at a pitiful scrub and his f-boy friend. Not gallant at all.

The Boarding House: 4/5
Perfectly Irish. Drunk dad, badass mom, innocent-ish daughter, nerdy lover plus lots of catholic guilt. Age gap crazy tho

Araby: 6/5
“I did not know whether I would ever speak to her or not or, if I spoke to her, how I could tell her of my confused adoration”
Perfectly describes the feeling of a childhood crush, the efforts a boy will go to, and the pain it can cause. Joyce doesn’t do resolutions. He just leaves you holding his character’s feeling.

The Encounter 3.5/5
1890s stranger danger. Really great tension development, and a lot left unsaid. Was going to be a 3 cause some details earlier in the story didnt amount to anything, but their relevance just clicked to me. Green eyes=creep

For St. Pats…

Sisters 2.5/5
This story is a realistic look at someone’s thoughts, in that, noone actually self-narrates. Which is an interesting way to write, but confusing to read. No character backstory, they just show up, interact, our narrator sees it, and then it ends and I don’t know why.
