Rereading as an audiobook for a class I am sitting in on. I agree with the book's premise about systemic racism, but the writing is not rhetorically, aesthetically or intellectually on the level of other books on race (and even literal legal critical race theory) that I've read, including in a prior rendition of this class. Curious to see how students will respond to it.

Little thing that may seem tangential to the main themes of this book, but which I think is actually a profound act of changing thoughts and values: When Oluo's eight-year-old son realized the problems with pledging allegience to the US in school each day, he led his class in reading/reciting a poem aloud instead. If only the complexity, beauty, and humanity of good poetry could replace "patriotism."
