Winston conflating intelligence with sanity being his undoing is poetic…
The fact O’brien can be so smart and yet so willing to engage in the lunacy of the party is what is truly frightening

I understand the criticisms of this work simply being an essay more now but is such a good one how can you not enjoy it. Obriens character coming into focus has been enjoyable and has progressed the plot nicely.
Chapter “war is peace” was entertaining the true achievement of 1984 is world building. More than the characters or plot it is the setting that’s ingenious.
Love the role of education in 1984 too

Love the character of Julia and the differences in her and Winston’s vision of success.
Her focus on individual survival and rebellion as her ultimate victory while Winston views overthrowing the party through a collective effort, however unlikely, as his.
Also have so much to say about love being the ultimate act of rebellion in the world of 1984
Still really enjoying this book

Love how Orwell frames the fight to oppress the peoples freedom as one against human nature.
how the party distorts sexuality and makes coupling solely about children is another excellent example of how the outer opposition faced by the people in Airstrip 1 is mirrored by an internal opposition within themselves
“Until they become conscious they can not rebel and until they rebel they can not become conscious”

I can already tell after my first sitting that this will be one of my favourite books.
Somethings are popular for a reason and it seems like 1984 is a perfect example.
Not only does Orwell do an awesome job of bringing you into the world of Airstrip one so that you’re hooked on its mysterious depravity from the start but his commentary on what government overreach and moral decay can look like is so astute.
