Love... People are so quick to use that word. Of course a mother loves her son but... But what? You can't have a but in love. The moment you need to say something after 'love', can it really be called love? She cares, sure. But that's not love as I understand it, as people think and talk about it, as people, as a child, deserves.

The difference between a good book and a great book is not about how much you like the main character - it's in how much you like and respect all the side characters - the ones you want punch. If those characters make the story better, that's a really good sign of how good a book is.
