This short one is taking longer than anticipated: as I read along, I’m often confident that I’ve got a grasp on the threads of the numerous characters and hundreds of years worth of interweaving stories.

But then, mere paragraphs later, I lurch to a halt and begin to fear that, perhaps, I am not actually properly understanding any of it…

That said, much of it is still a riot to read. So, onwards I go.
