“It is curious, isn’t it, how easily we accept the explanations we’ve been given?"

"I did not blame any of the others for their choices, no more than I blamed myself. But . . . a private part of me mourned for them, for us. For the friendships we might have had, had society not forced us into the role of enemies."

"With fewer Weavers than silkwitches, and our futures entirely dependent on securing a husband, we would always be like foxes in a trap, chewing off our legs for a chance at safety."

"How many times had a silkwitch like me been elevated according to a Weaver’s fickle desires, then brought down when he tired of her?"

YA Regency Era fantasy/murder mystery, who done it - I'm loving this book so freaking much! The symbolism in the women's hair being the conduit for male sorcerer's magic - truly, chef's kiss. The mystery part is so well done. The trials in the competition are fun and innovative.

"“Weavers are wolves, Miss Lovett. They act only to feed themselves and their kin. It would be a mistake to confuse one for a docile creature, just because it has deigned to let you pet it.”

"Perhaps, I decided, it was more the sensation of the loss which had unsettled me: as if a piece of myself had been stolen away and now called for me from some distant place I couldn’t reach. Like I belonged to people I did not know."

"The majority of girls like you hardly even touch their hair before marriage— I have heard of some who refuse to brush it at all, so afraid are they of losing any strands that might otherwise be used to bolster their dower.”

"We could be stolen, of course, we could be lured, but a silkwitch given freely in marriage . . . Well, did one consider the safety of a string of pearls, when passing it off to a happy customer? It had been bought. It was a belonging— it belonged."

L: "If you're going to arrest me, I would prefer you get on with it."
G: "I am not going to arrest you. I simply wish to get to know you."
L: "You seem to know a great deal about me already."
G: "Aren't you going to finish that thought, 'And yet I, almost nothing about you'?"
L: "Excuse me, sir, I seem to have forgotten my line. Perhaps if you were to hand me a script..."
G: Amused snort "Clever."

"Until the day we wed, our power was as remote to us as an underground spring; our duty lay in keeping it pure, safeguarding it for our future husbands’ use, but never did we drink from it ourselves."
I'm loving what Gregovic is putting down here.
