holy shit

there is a moment in this book where the scullion maid has her minders contemplate cutting her hair and replacing it with a wig. and she's so attached to it that she fears what she'll do to them if they raise a hand to alter it. her identity is so tied to her hair, her mother's hair, and her heritage that she fears what will happen to her sense of self when they try to change it. it's a fucking amazing scene.
