Chapter 5 revolves around Ichiros immediate family. Their family receives another letter proving Japan lost the war. The letter is from Ma’s sister, containing a memory only Ma would know. Instead of believing, she believes that someone is torturing her family, forcing them to write about a false narrative of the war. The chapter ends with Pa lying, claiming it’s a hoax to calm Ma. Ichiro is disgusted and upset.

Chapter 6 is purely around Kenji’s life. It shows his family and his fears surrounding his leg. Kenji fears that his doctors appointment will be his last, as his leg feels worse. On the way, Ichiro gets pulled over by a racist cop. Kenji forced Ichiro to switch seats with him and gets the ticket. He also tells him to take the car when he’s gone, showing Kenji does not plan on living long.

The chapter ends with Kenji and Ichiro going to Portland.

When Kenji lost his leg, a bacteria continued to eat the surrounding flesh, making him question if it was worth it. People told him he was a hero, but didn’t feel like it. The chapter ends with Ichiro going home to Taro turning 18 and depending to enlist.

Ichiro Yamado declared that he would not represent the US Army during Pearl Harbor, forcing him to go to prison for 2 years and a camp for an additional 2 years. Chapter 1 follows Ichiro around as he readjusts to his family and neighbors. This grants him some praise while other find him distasteful.
