Story 2: When Mr Pirzada came to dine revolves around an American family hosting a man who escaped the Bangladesh liberation war. The perspective is from a little girl who does not fully understand the concept.

This book is a compilation of short stories. The first short story follows couple Shoba and Shakumaur as they navigate life after grief. It shows the couple grow distance, come back together, and then come to terms with how the grief has changed them.

Chapter 3 is from the boys perspective. He is trapped at the camp, yet in a child-like state, he only thinks of things such as toys and his bike. We see the less worrisome part of the awful camps that the people were forced into.

The second chapter is from the perspective of the girl. The girl is on the train where she meets a solider, Ted, and the old Japanese man. Her train ride is spent contemplating her time at other camps and wondering about her father.

Chapter 1 revolves around a mother in 1942, who discovers she must prepare to leave town. We do not know what the sign said, however with context clues, we can infer that her and her children are being “evacuated” as a response to Pearl Harbor. Her actions show that she does not believe they’ll be returning home.

Chapter 11 ends with Freddie dying, hinting to the idea that living your entire life being hateful is useless.

Chapter 10 is itchy’s breakthrough. He goes looking for another job again, where he meets Mr.Morrison and Gary. Gary convinces itchy that life is so much bigger than himself. He recognizes this by the end of the chapter.

Chapter 9 follows Itchy and his journey to become less self loathing. He begins to understand how his own negativity was affecting his life and others around him

Chapter 8 revolves around the unraveling of families. With both Kenji and Ma dying, itchy loses two opposite sides of his mental spectrum

Ichiro and Kenji go to Portland for Kenji’s doctors appointment. Ichiro uses the time to job hunt and explore his options. Unfortunately, Ichiro also must say goodbye to Kenji and Emi during this chapter as an attempt to move on

Chapter 6 is purely around Kenji’s life. It shows his family and his fears surrounding his leg. Kenji fears that his doctors appointment will be his last, as his leg feels worse. On the way, Ichiro gets pulled over by a racist cop. Kenji forced Ichiro to switch seats with him and gets the ticket. He also tells him to take the car when he’s gone, showing Kenji does not plan on living long.

Chapter 5 revolves around Ichiros immediate family. Their family receives another letter proving Japan lost the war. The letter is from Ma’s sister, containing a memory only Ma would know. Instead of believing, she believes that someone is torturing her family, forcing them to write about a false narrative of the war. The chapter ends with Pa lying, claiming it’s a hoax to calm Ma. Ichiro is disgusted and upset.

Chapter 4 summary: Kenji and Ichiro start the chapter inside the club, hoping to gamble, however, it begins to falter quickly. Taro bring Ichiro out to get harassed and terrorized, cause Kenji to take him home for the night. Kenji introduces him to Emi, in hopes they will take care of eachother when Kenji is gone. The chapter ends with Kenji and Ichiro going to Portland.

Chapter 3 revolves around Ichiro and Kenji. Kenji, also 25, decided to go to war. Unfortunately, he lost his leg and was discharged, earning a silver star. When Kenji lost his leg, a bacteria continued to eat the surrounding flesh, making him question if it was worth it. People told him he was a hero, but didn’t feel like it. The chapter ends with Ichiro going home to Taro turning 18 and depending to enlist.

Chapter 2 follows Ichiro to Freddie Akimoto’s house, after an argument with his mother. Freddie Akimoto (lives on 19th) was also a “no-no boy” and explains to Ichiro how he will not feel better, unless he starts living. The chapter ends with Freddie inviting Ichiro to a poker night where he can meet other no-no boys.

Ichiro Yamanda is a 25 year old Japanese American, residing in Seattle, 4 years after Pearl Harbor. Ichiro Yamado declared that he would not represent the US Army during Pearl Harbor, forcing him to go to prison for 2 years and a camp for an additional 2 years. Chapter 1 follows Ichiro around as he readjusts to his family and neighbors. This grants him some praise while other find him distasteful.

No one mind me reading random books. These updates are for my final semester!!! I have Asian literature, so good reads can just have all my notes.
