Because I absolutely refuse to leave a Greg Egan book unfinished. Especially now that I'm about to get some more.
Also, beaming people up as gamma ray bursts and/or data packges seems to be a leitmotif in Mr./Mrs. Egan's works. It's really exciting, but it may turn tedious after being used in almost every story as the single intergalactic means of transportation.

This is officially going to the stalled shelf. Generally, one book per year is the right amount of Greg Egan a normal person (such as myself) can read without getting headaches. We're in May and this is already my third, so I'm calling a break...
