ah, i have at last figured out what country this is set in.

If this was a normal book there'd be a giant shoe about to drop, but who knows.

I've been feeling uncommitted to this since i started, but I guess at 35% I should go ahead and put it on currently reading. I don't dislike it, but I feel like the author is focused so much on portraying an autistic experience, it's getting in the way of the story and slowing the pace too much.
