I thought the cover was a photo montage. But no, it says in the novel that the skyscraper called "The Shard" looms directly in your line of sight on Brixton Hill Road.

The Shard is the really tall one with the one straight side. ( And it's 3 miles away.)

Omg, this is exactly like when Germans try to copy American action movies. The will is there, the ability is not.
For the sake of my reading challenges, I will solider on.... (so no, not DNFing, Rod!)

1st book for a new 10-book reading challenge!! A German thriller cleverly disguised as a British thriller. Don't be fooled! (I was 🧐)

Valerie Book Valkyrie Such cold architectural style🥶! A building dubbed The Shard reeks of shattered glass & prison yards😬; The Gherkin looming in the background is resplendent in its resemblence to a pharmaceuticle suppository😳.

Berengaria Did you know the names already, or did you look up The Gherkin? For me, the Gherkin has something. There's a style there. The Shard is just uuuuuugglyyyyyy....

Valerie Book Valkyrie I learned about The Gherkin in 1992 when my mom and I spent a week in London. At that time there was a "futuristic" exhibit depicting the designs that were in the works for a replacement structure to replace the one that had been blown up earlier that year. Initially dubbed the "Millennium Tower", the original design was much larger. I haven't been back to London since then so never had the opportunity to visit The Gherkin in all it's physical glory. Have you? If so, what was your impression?

Sportyrod There’s a hideous residential building next to the famous Sydney Opera House called The Toaster. And slow down already. It’s not a race 🐌

Cool! No, haven't visited as when I'm in England, I'm normally not in London. Or at least not in The City. But I've seen a number of films, vids and up-close photos of it. Whereas, the Shard....😑

THE TOASTER. Googled...wow, that has NO style whatsoever. Looks like it was drawn with a ruler.

Slow down??? Huh? Can't hear you, I'm hopping along too quickly and ears are flapping in the wind... 🐇

hawk love the sound/story of the Toaster... tho probably wouldn't like it in person/reality...

hawk great observations and contrasting impressions of the two buildings Valerie :D

and an interesting perspective on them on your book cover, Berengaria, looking towards them from the South.

I don't know either well/up close, and have kinda found them both (and others thereabouts) abit odd really... I guess I find both abit alienating.

Almost all modern architecture is somehow alienating, I find. It's the size and the aggressive, "sod off" quality of glass, steel and concrete. It feels like its looking down on you and not in a good way. (Or at least, that's my impression)

Yes, the author's name has a B in it, too! But unfortunately, doubles don't count in this challenge. 🙁
