this entire situation is absolute gold but maomao not having asked jinshi because she knew she couldn't offer him the same night with pairin that she did with lihaku is so !!!!!!!!!!! she thought she had nothing to barter with so she didn't bother, but JINSHI WOULDN'T HAVE NEEDED TO BE BARTERED WITH AT ALL. god i LOVE how these last 2 chapters peel back the curtain on the pleasure district and really allow us to see it from all angles. we start in verdigris house and see the courtesans there seem to have lots of power, but then going to a mid-ranking house immediately reminds us that all of these women are trapped nonetheless. even if the cage is gilded, even if the garden is well tended, they're all confines in the end
