Think often of the infinite patience and forbearance of God. How many affronts does He bear with from us. How often we give Him occasion to be angry with us, yet "He hath not dealt with us after our sins." Let this great example be ours.

God does not require us to come and confess our sins so that He might know something that He did not know before, but so that there might be a testimony that you are willing that He should know all that is in your heart. -Pg. 118

'Whatever we think and whatever we say of Him should savor of His excellency, correspond to the sacred sublimity of His name, and tend to the exaltation of His magnificence' (Calvin). Anything pertaining to God should be spoken of with the greatest sobriety.

As you know, the Scripture says that the altar sanctifies the gift offered upon the altar. Jesus Christ is the Altar upon whom all our spiritual sacrifices are to be offered; and this Altar sanctifies the gift that is offered upon it.

The fact that the Law takes cognizance of our most secret dispositions and intentions, that it demands the holy regulation of our mind, affections, and will, and that it requires all our obedience to proceed from love at once demonstrates its Divine origin. No other law ever professed to govern the spirit of man, but He who searches the heart claims nothing less.

Let the main thing that you prize in God's house be not the outward ornaments of it, or an high seat in it, but the word of Christ, and God's ordinance in it. - Edwards, Pg. 59-60

For whatever you lift up in the high place, that's your God, whatever it may be. Therefore, if you lift up the praise of men and make it your end, you make that your God. So you are a worshiper of men, but not a worshiper of God.

“Almost all doctrinal error is really truth perverted, truth wrongfully divided, truth disproportionately held and taught. The fairest face on earth, with the most comely features, would soon become ugly and unsightly if one member continued growing while the others remained undeveloped. Beauty is, primarily, a matter of proportion."

We have, perhaps unwittingly, redefined our God and what it means to know Him. He is a preference, a choice, who when we convert bestows upon us what we've always deserved. With little grip on a biblical understanding of the Almighty, we who are called to be shaped in His holy image have done the reverse: we have shaped Him in our image. -pg. 42

Of course it is true that doctrine, like anything else in Scripture, may be studied from a merely cold intellectual viewpoint, and thus approached, doctrinal teaching and doctrinal study will leave the heart untouched, and will naturally be “dry” and profitless. But doctrine properly received, doctrine studied with an exercised heart, will ever lead into a deeper knowledge of God and the unsearchable riches of Christ

The Word of God leaves no half life to man, but teaches, that in regard to life and happiness, he has utterly perished. Paul, when he speaks of our redemption, says not that the half dead are cured but that those who were dead are raised up. He does not call upon the half dead to receive the illumination of Christ, but upon those who are asleep and buried.

True liberty is not the power to live as we please, but to live as we ought! Hence, the only One Who has ever trod this earth since Adam's fall that has enjoyed perfect freedom was the Man Christ Jesus, the Holy servant of God, Whose meat it ever was to do the will of the Father.

“It is not enough or in any sense Christian to preach the works, life, and words of Christ as historical facts, as if the knowledge of these would suffice.…Rather ought Christ to be preached that faith in Him may be established and that He may not only be Christ, but be Christ for you and me, and that what is said of Him and is denoted in His name may be effectual in us.”

Though from one of the letters recognized as spurious, I thought this was a good quote:
"Do not believe all persons, do not place confidence in all; nor let any man get the better of thee by flattery. For many are the ministers of satan; and'he that is hasty to believe is light of heart'."

The most rebellious, countercultural thing you can do in our culture is to be happily married until death do you part. Very few people are doing it.
