the terms “wise and understanding” and “little children” in Luke 10:21 do not correspond simply to “educated” and “uneducated.” Jesus is not saying that the uneducated get the grace of revelation and the educated don’t. To put it another way, there are “little children” among the educated and there are boastful among the uneducated.

the Lord, by His ascension to heaven, has opened up the access to the heavenly kingdom, which Adam had shut. For having entered it in our flesh, as it were in our name, it follows, as the Apostle says, that we are in a manner now seated in heavenly places, not entertaining a mere hope of heaven, but possessing it in our head.

I am pleading for a hearty engagement of the mind in the pursuit of God. I am not pleading mainly for more formal education. That may or may not be good in different cases. But the right use of the mind is always good no matter how much or how little education one has.

For we, though in ourselves polluted, in Him being priests, offer ourselves and our all to God, and freely enter the heavenly sanctuary, so that the sacrifices of prayer and praise which we present are grateful and of sweet order before Him.

The fires of love for God need fuel. And the fires of love for God drive the engines of thought and deed.  There is a circle. Thinking feeds the fire, and the fire fuels more thinking and doing. I love God because I know him. And I want to know him more because I love him.

Those of us who are regenerated to a new life God honors with the name of sons; the name of true and only begotten Son he bestows on Christ alone. But how is he an only Son in so great a multitude of brethren, except that he possesses by nature what we acquire by gift?

I will suggest that loving God with the mind means that our thinking is wholly engaged to do all it can to awaken and express the heartfelt fullness of treasuring God above all things.

Mark, it came effectually to work because they received it as the Word of God. Many times you will say, "Come, let us go hear a man preach." Oh, no, let us go hear Christ preach, for as it concerns the ministers of God that they preach not themselves, but that Christ should preach in them, so it concerns you that you do not come to hear this man or that man, but to come to hear Jesus Christ.

There is no reason to believe that a person who thinks without prayerful trust in God's gift of understanding will get it. And there is no reason to believe that a person who waits for God's gift of understanding without thinking about his Word will get it either. Both-and. Not either-or.

This is the golden rule of reading: “Do unto authors as you would have them do unto you.” Authors want to be understood, not misunderstood. So, for the reader, the golden rule of reading implies: work hard with your mind to understand what an author intended to convey.

The theme for the latest blog is, "Whatever is commendable." While not specifically a New Years post, it is good material for reflecting on in this new year how our lives reflect God to those around us.

It would be vain for men to impose statutes upon that of which they can take no cognizance, and therefore our desires and lustings are free from their censure, except so far as they discover themselves by overt acts. But though they escape the commands and notice of men, yet they escape not the scrutiny and sentence of God, for He sees not as men see, neither judges He as men judge.

Theft, in general, is an unjust taking or keeping to ourselves what is lawfully another’s. He is a thief who withholds what ought to be in his neighbor’s possession just as much as one who takes his neighbor’s property from him. Hence this commandment is grossly violated both by management and labor.
