دیگر اینکه آیا می‌داند من آدم توداری هستم و او گفت :«فقط برای اینکه حرفی زده باشد، حرف نمی‌زد.»

آخرش آدم به همه چیز عادت می‌کند.

امیدوارم سگ‌ها امشب عوعو نکنند. همه‌اش فکر می‌کنم صدای سگ خودم است.

گفت که آدم عجیبی هستم و بدون شک به همین دلیل دوستم دارد. اما شاید یک روزی هم به همین دلیل از من متنفر شود.

دلم می‌خواست به او می‌گفتم تقصیر من نبوده، اما نگفتم چون فکر کردم این را قبلا به رئیسم گفته بودم. هیچ معنایی ندارد. به هر جهت، همیشه کمی مقصریم.

Becoming requires equal parts patience and rigor. Becoming is never giving up on the idea that there’s more growing to be done.

I have become, by certain measures, a person of power, and yet there are moments still when I feel insecure or unheard.

Becoming isn’t about arriving somewhere or achieving a certain aim. I see it instead as forward motion, a means of evolving, a way to reach continuously toward a better self. The journey doesn’t end.

I grew up with a disabled dad in a too-small house with not much money in a starting-to-fail neighborhood, and I also grew up surrounded by love and music in a diverse city in a country where an education can take you far. I had nothing or I had everything. It depends on which way you want to tell it.

So many of us go through life with stories hidden, feeling ashamed or afraid when our whole truth doesn’t live up to some established ideal. That if your skin is dark or our hips are wide, if we don’t experience love in a particular way, if we speak another language or come from another country, then we don’t belong. That is, until someone dares to start telling that story differently.

Being president doesn’t change who you are; it reveals who you are.

You may live in the world as it is, but you can still work to create the world as it should be.

You got somewhere by building that better reality, if at first only in your own mind.

Life was teaching me that progress and change happen slowly. Not in two years, four years, or even a lifetime. We were planting seeds of change, the fruit of which we might never see. We had to be patient.

I had learned through my years of trying to find balance in my life that it was okay to flip those priorities and care only for ourselves once in a while.

I know from my own life experience that when someone shows genuine interest in your learning and development, even if only for ten minutes in a busy day, it matters.

I understood that my trajectory was unusual, but there was no good reason why it had to be.

I felt sometimes like a swan on a lake, knowing that my job was in part to glide and appear serene, while underwater I never stopped pedaling my legs.

As a kid, you learn to measure long before you understand the size or value of anything. Eventually, if you’re lucky, you learn that you’ve been measuring all wrong.

Public judgement sweeps in to fill any void. If you don’t get out there and define yourself, you’ll be quickly and inaccurately defined by others.

Dear old world, you are very lovely, and I’m glad to be alive in you.

We resent the thought that anything can please us when someone we love is no longer here to share the pleasure with us, and we almost feel as if we were unfaithful to our sorrow when we find our interest in life returning to us.

As long as I know the violents are coming out all purple down in the hollow below Green Gables and that little ferns are poking their heads up in Lover’s Lane, it’s not a great deal of difference whether I win the Avery or not. I’ve done my best and I begin to understand what is meant by the ‘joy of the strife’. Next to trying and winning, the best thing is trying and failing.

It’s delightful to have ambitions. I’m so glad I have such a lot. And there never seems to be any end to them—that’s the best of it. Just as soon as you attain to one ambition you see another one glittering higher up still. It does make life so interesting.

Look at that sea, girls—all silver and shadow and vision of things not seen. We couldn’t enjoy its loveliness any more if we had millions of dollars and ropes if diamonds.

We can’t have things perfect in this imperfect world.

It’s really wonderful, Marilla, what you can do when you’re truly anxious to please a certain person.

All the little wood things have gone to sleep, just as if somebody had tucked them away until spring under a blanket of leaves.
