This book is amazing. Sharp, stark detail and unbelievably gruff for being so level. Calculated, strong and intense as hell.

Jason is on page 78 of 366 of The Tao of Physics: An Exploration of the Parallels between Modern Physics and Eastern Mysticism
The only way to divide subatomic particles further is to bang them together in collision processes involving high energies. This way, we can divide matter again and again, but we never obtain smaller pieces because we just create particles out of the energy involved in the process. The subatomic particles are thus destructible and indestructible at the same time.

didn't know FDR allowed such breaches of habeas corpus. Then, Lincoln did too.

Hemon is a brilliant writer. the kind i would like to write a letter to celebrating him for his impeccable detail, to make everything peculiar and estranged in a familiar way. But i know this would just make him self-conscious, because that's the point, and would then impede on his writing. So why write the letter?

We are now about to die the death of endeavour.
We have lain down on the old weary-bed
and composed our limbs and faces
to a picture once we saw we fancy
in a church or schoolroom(but it hangs
unpainted on the wall of heaven,
we shall never look like that,
Heaven went as we got up that first time,
mistrusting the young sleep of not being)
of an angel copied out of sleep
by a shaded hand, scribling the dawn

I forgot what a wonder it is to read Mcmurtry. How developed his characters are and how instantly transported you are into his frontier. I already know this is going to be as good as Lonesome Dove. I feel like starting this book has been the best thing i've done all summer.

Jason is starting Johnny Got His Gun
Nine million corpses later, when the bands stopped and the serenities started running, the wail of bagpipes would never again sound quite the same. It was the last of the romantic wars; and Johnny Got His Gun was probably the last American novel written about it before an entirely different affair called World War II got under way"

Jason is starting Johnny Got His Gun
It was a season of generosity; a time for boasts, bands, poems, songs, innocent prayers. It was an August made palpitant and breathless by the prenuptial nights of young gentlemen-officers and the girls they left permanently behind them. One of the Highland regiments went over the top in its first battle behind forty kilted bagpipers, skirling away for all they were worth--at machine guns.

"World War I began like a summer festival--all billowing skirts and golden epaulets. Millions upon millions cheered from the sidewalks while plumed imperial highnesses, serenities, field marshals and other such fools paraded through capital cities of Europe at the head of their shining legions.
