Because his family really made him the person he is.
I mean, he cannot even admit himself that he is fruity (and oh man, he is).
Also, I'm pretty sure he has some kind of mental illness because this boy is fckn sad and he seems to drown it in drugs.
But you can really see he wants to be a good person (when Darrow shows him what respect and a family really is)
