I won't be finishing this. I can help but roll my eyes at the terrible prose, which manages to be both unsubstantiatedly arrogant and completely unclear. The further into the story I got, the more potential I could see, but it continued to be an unbearable read, overall.

So the first few chapters are pretty unbearable. Tons of exposition with so much made-up fantasy language that it's near impossible to understand what's going on. This is exasperated by the fact no one bothers to try explaining. Once the story starts, it's a bit better. A lot of quasi-political intrigue. And I still don't know what most things are (WTF is a mentat? Why is a guy named Idaho?). And SPICE!

This will be my 3rd time approaching this book. I'm trying it as an audio book this time, as I haven't been able to make it past the first few chapters and Herbert's terrible prose. That said, there are enough people who tell me that the story and world are worth the effort, so I'm trying one more time. If this doesn't do it, I'm ignoring it for good

This is such a beautiful, simply written book. It's quite charming

Really enjoying this so far. Like the main character I feel just on the peripheral of understanding what's going on and it's keeping me hooked
