I think I’ve hit on what really distinguishes Mr. Roberts’ writing: it’s his timing. He knows precisely when and where to relate his tales.

I love this passage

it’s been relentlessly fascinating, but never so heartbreaking until now: “They assumed that I’d simply tired of life in the slum, and that I’d returned to my comfortable life in my comfortable country, like every other tourist or traveller they’d ever known.”

This is fantastic so far, all the more so in how I find I identify (and don’t) with Ms. Jackson, and also her husband... maybe in this isolation vicariousness is at a premium, but I don’t think that’s all.

the furor over Goodyear’s “run-in” is overblown. wouldn’t amount to more than a scrolling chyron. and his “mysterious” problem is obvious.

these sportswriter interstitials are INTERMINABLE

The diction is haphazard... Ms. Nemens is too fond of the dash— not of the parenthetical variety, but the dash-as-joiner

“And Michael still thinks of swinging a bat as he thrusts.”

No. No no no no no... not only is this (and the following sentence) bad sex writing, it breaks the voice as set up in the first chapter. ugh
