I can't describe the effect that a simple smile had on his face. I can try, but I know I won't do it any justice. Because when he smiled, he showed all his teeth, like a wolf, but it was inexplicably innocent, free from ferocity. When he smiled, there was a light in his eyes. When he smiled, his dimples were deep. I saw his missing tooth and the hidden laughter he had bottled up for years.

Granny was cooking eggs. I might have stared. I'd never seen anyone cook eggs. Dad and I tended to use the oven strictly as a closet. The only time I'd eaten eggs was when he took me to the local diner, a really greasy dive with plastic booths that stuck to your thighs. We ordered powdered eggs and burned coffee and sat complaining about baseball and church. Those days comprised some of my favorite memories.

It’s the classic story of boy meets boy, boy loves boy, boy leaves boy, boy hates boy, boy comes back and loves boy again. Plus ghosts.

Now I worked in the Paranormal Tactical Unit at the Brickell Bay Police Department. It’s like the cold case unit…plus ghosts. Hell, everything in my life was plus ghosts, much to my chagrin. My driver’s license should read Rainstorm Christiansen (Plus Ghosts).

A large gray cat emerged from the shadows and pushed between Colin’s feet with a loud meow. The surreal nature of this moment made Colin look around with more awareness, and now that he knew what to search for, he was spotting cats everywhere around the room.

Oh, God, this explains everything. This guy was hunting to feed his cat pack. This would not be the way for Colin to go. No way in hell!

None of Colin's wheezing apologies would alter his fate. He had him now, and once he was no longer sated from his last kill, Colin would be there to satisfy his bloodlust. The man was on his own turf and didn’t even bother to gag Colin, because he knew no one would hear Colin’s screams. Colin's senses were aware of nothing but the smell of blood and male sweat.
