Colfer is actually pretty good at the adult fiction he presumably mostly took up so that he could say the f-word fuck and kill his characters with bullets.

I know this is a bleak series rotating around religious fundamentalism but, even in that context, the jihadists were a surprise.

Messy but fascinating. ISIS destroying Timbuktu? Ayn Rand? Richard Dawkins? Borges-style mysterious rose factory in the desert? House of Cards machinations? Indentured servitude? All of this gets flung in. You wish for some of the casually supernatural world so thrillingly depicted in the original trilogy though, and perhaps some stakes clearer and more emotionally resonant than the obscure Spice War here.

Slightly frustrated that what looks like an Easter egg appears to be unrealised.

Chbosky has clearly spent the last twenty years in Stephen King Studies, but one thing he learned was how to make a long book gather the pace of a thriller.

Still haven’t met Ahab, the supposed protagonist; usually protagonists, even in 650-page novels, turn up in the first quarter of the book.
