Bitter Fruit: a follow up to 'The Mirror-Scaled Serpent' from the second book, this follows Kes and Tuvok as they attempt to assassinate B'Elanna. Much like that first story, it's gruesome and exciting. It's also beginning giving us a nice developing thread through the stories with Memory Omega, and I'm interested in Kes' change of heart. I quite enjoyed it.

The Mirror-Scaled Serpent: maybe my favourite MU story so far, and it's a Voyager one. This is gruesome stuff and features a lot of death and a fair bit of sex. An exciting story which flips the Voyager premise around by having Neelix and Kes be the ones transported to the Alpha Quadrant instead, and encountering the Terran resistance. The Voyager characters are really inverted to be despicably evil people.

The Sacred Chalice: a fairly sedate but intriguing story about Deanna and her mother, who run a brothel on Betazed. Picard arrives and there are revelations, and then it ends extremely quickly without much chance to take things in. Decent.

'Twould Ring the Bells of Heaven: Counsellor Troi gets her first away team command and things go wrong. It starts out with an extreme amount of scientific technobabble and I found my attention wandering, so much so that when it gets to the far more enjoyable stuff later, I was a bit lost as to what was going on.

Command Code: set immediately after the pilot, Chakotay and Tuvok have a disagreement during a crisis. It seemed a bit odd that this argument was going on during the middle of a battle, but I guess it was tense. Gave a good insight into both of their ways of thinking.

The Sorrows of Empire: this energetic and political story follows the actions of Spock after the episode 'Mirror, Mirror'. It's grandiose and covers several decades, incorporating characters and events from a number of episodes and films. A bit hard to follow at times due to how fast it moves and how abstract a number of the political ideas are. Spock himself seems more stoic than usual and hard to get a handle on.

The Greater Good: we finally meet the mirror universe James Kirk. He's pretty evil, and this disjointed story sees him taking power and gaining command of the Enterprise. It jumps around all over the place and incorporates plot elements from 'The Cage'. A bit confusing to read at times and feels more like it's setting the scene for the 'Mirror, Mirror' episode.

Ill Winds: an enjoyable adventure with Commodore Robert April in charge of the ISS Constellation. There's (slightly) less backstabbing here, and much more sense of a crew who trusts each other; that serves as some relief from the pure evil that seems to inhabit the characters of the Enterprise-era stories. Still has some nasty moments of cruelty and torture.

Age of the Empress: an Enterprise-era story that picks up immediately from the end of the related episodes and continues Hoshi's tale. It's very dramatic, as with most stuff set in the mirror universe and pretty good fun. I'm not the biggest fan of Enterprise and have very little love for these characters, but these "evil" versions of them have a lot more spirit. Lots of action and double-crosses, silly but I liked.

Nobunaga: a follow up to the novella 'Age of the Empress' from the Glass Empires book. It is a fast paced and well written story about Trip that effectively conveys the confusion of a distorted reality. An excellent sense of displacement shifting senses. Quick and perhaps a bit over-the-top at times, but enjoyable.

Ordinary Days: a strange but quite compelling story. It's set in an alternate timeline in which Wesley Crusher made very different choices with his life, culminating in the season 7 episode 'Journey's End'. I wasn't quite sure what was going on at first but it was fascinating and there were nice references to episodes but with very different consequences happening.

Curzon: honestly, I have no idea what happened in this one. It seems like all Star Trek short story collections will inevitably have a story involving insane aliens that use organic technology and just make no sense. Plus, why is Ben Sisko narrating a story in a book of stories that are supposed to be about Dax telling HER own stories?

Joran: the least enjoyable story for me so far, given how full of clichés it is. It's trying to do a Star Trek version of a Hannibal Lector sort of tale, a tortured creative soul and the obsessed detective who's the only one who can understand how he's thinking. It ends very abruptly and is mercifully short.

Torias: a very short and direct story about how Torias dies. It sets up the DS9 episode 'Rejoined' and is well written, although doesn't really give us much character or detail. It's set shortly before Wrath of Khan and features Saavik. An exciting little story but a bit plain.

Audrid: this tale is a bit more grim than anything else so far. It's presented in the form of a letter that Audrid has written to her daughter, attempting to explain the circumstances around her father's death. It ties into the early (and notoriously gruesome) TNG episode 'Conspiracy'. The fact that the story is presented with all the text in italics makes it a bit hard on the eyes, but it's mostly gripping.
