it's alwayws like jumping into an icy lake picking up an Amber book. it's just unlike anything else when it comes to narrative style. i've said it before the closest thing i can think of is Narnia, but it's way less twinkly than that.

the sad fact of it is, i'm just a sucker for books in the Horatio Hornblower model. (Honor Harrington, Miles Vorkosigan, and Temeraire) --but i've never read even the first hornblower book.
