I do like this novel so far, but at the moment I'm really uncomfortable with the heroine conflating suicide and cowardice. ("It was a coward's way out.") Hoping she gains a little nuance and perspective as the story goes on because that kind of judgmental dismissiveness REALLY distances me from Max.

This book is a treasure.

Cow Tom and Rose are just ridiculously engaging characters. This book is so, so good.

Falling further in love with Citizens Creek. Tademy knows how to pace a story; it feels like the pages fly by but there's so much richness and subtlety and nuanced characterization. What stands out to me most, ~100 pages in, is empathy. Every character's decision feels true to them and, given their circumstances and needs and desires, totally understandable. I have a feeling this novel is going to break my heart.

This is really, really good.

Fast-paced and absorbing so far. The kind of book it's tough to read in bits and pieces on lunch breaks; you really want to carve out the time it deserves to just sit and Read It.
