Okay, dead baby time. Prediction: Alessandro will murder the doctor who refused to treat the baby, then Alessandro will be hunted down and executed and everything will go all to hell for Ramona. Not sure what will happen with Felipe and the jewels. This is depressing.

This book is killing me. It's way better written than I assumed it would be. Most of the characters are chillingly plausible and their inner worlds and motives are explored and revealed with just the right amount of detail. Everyone's individual interior narrative intersects with everyone else's to propel the main plot and it's just damn compelling.

This stupid book is going to break my heart, I can tell. It's set up a love quadrangle in which all four participants are sympathetic. Why won't Helen Hunt Jackson satisfy my need for purely evil antagonists? Oh, and while this novel is pretty damn racist it is so far WAY less racist than expected. We'll see how it holds up.

Unsurprising, this book is depressing as HELL.
Engrossing, though. And I don't think it's going to leave me without a sense of hope or whatever. It's just, wow, yes, Columbine is difficult to read about.

Ha ha ha I haven't picked this up since my last update, nor have I read anything else. I'm basically illiterate. I either need to suck it up and finish Pillars of the Earth or read something else.

Exhausting. Too vividly written & convincingly characterized to put it aside for good, but so demoralizingly, relentlessly unpleasant to just keep reading. I can't overemphasize the unpleasantness.
