Interesting enough, but pretty heady

Pedantic, sure.

“Spinster and bachelor, for example, designate an unmarried adult but when this word is marked for males it is positive while when it is marked for females it is negative.”

Twas a coincidence that I turned to this after reading a Le Guin novel. It’s getting technical, looking at sexism in language, overtones, just getting going w/this.

Reminded of why I find her works so endearing & sincere. What a wondrous addition to Science Fiction she is! Just, so, naturally & effortlessly apart from other SF greats in tone and concept. Feel like I don’t need action-filled chapters w/her, and how she addresses politics is so penetrating, in just about all her stories. Love love love how she describes colored skin not just in one way (black people)!

That second story would make a solid movie

…and now folks, I begin skimming! Too many different perspectives with the same tone & voice. Too much magicky stuff to make for any sense of dread or tension—you know it’s all gonna work out fine, some vanishing acts and magical talisman, last-minute saved or rescued blah blah blah. But hey gimme credit for tryin at least: as a Dude, I’m clearly not the target audience here!

Every character sounds the same...

I am enjoying this tale, but I don’t like the three separate voices, because they all sound the same, the author didn’t really do enough to make each voice sound distinct, and it’s very confusing when she switches because there is no heading, you just have to start guessing which character you’re reading
