Apocalyptic disaster may have been done before, but wow - can’t put this one down! Really engaging and a definite page-turner.

OMFG MORE PLOT TWISTS THIS IS AMAZING.

Every television screenwriter who fails at tying up plotlines which seemingly have nothing to do with each other news to talk to Alex Marshall, stat! This is how it’s done!

Oh come on, Janet. Grow a backbone. It’s 1999, not 1499. Tell that husband of yours where to go.

I can’t remember the last time I read this, but it was published in 1999 so within the last 20 years obviously. Claustrophobic, depressing opening, though I know that’s to set the scene. Drunk father, spineless mother, “the twins” (boy plays football, girl looks after baby sister...of course.) It’s so stiflingly 1990s old fashioned family.

Ugh. I decided to give Dean Koontz another chance with this series. Story is OK by damn it he isn’t a total paranoid schizophrenic doomsday prepper. It sours his writing, seriously.

"In an act of family solidarity that she found awe-inspiring, her Mom and Dad waited to have their own lunch until they managed to spring her."

Why is that awe-inspiring? The parents have never thus far been portrayed as always-hungry gourmands who simply must eat NOW. Why wouldn't parents who were somewhere with their child, wait until she was able to eat lunch too? Makes no sense.

OMG no. "Discrete" used instead of "discreet"! Usually the error is made in reverse. Ugh.

Does anyone else think it's odd to have a father tell his teenager daughter that her mother is upstairs taking a bath and he's about to join her?! I didn't need to know that...and I'm sure the daughter didn't, either. It's very hard to figure out the intended audience for this book. The protagonists are teenagers but it's written for adults. Sometimes that works, but I don't think it does here.

Takeshi Kovacs is obviously and blatantly heterosexual yet loves to shop for clothes, too. I love when stereotypes are broken like this! Very cool.

But by the second chapter I was HOOKED. I love how Kovacs is both someone I can identify and empathize with, yet at the same time he's such a badass and crude in the way that guys are crude. His nonchalant mentioning of male physiology was at first shocking yet then kind of refreshing.

Interesting. To be honest, during the first chapter I only had a lukewarm impression--you're thrown headfirst into a world significantly different from ours, with lots of new vocab words that make little sense out of context.

WOAH. To imagine a reader can feel so much for one so alien. The end of this last chapter was amazing and intense and emotionally wrenching. Wow.

As I get into this one, the story itself is one of Koontz's better ones. He hasn't quite devolved into his Fox News-esque political foaming at the mouth as he does in later books. And it's a good thing, because the dog worship is nauseating. The dog serves no purpose in the story other than to give Koontz an opportunity to go "gaga" over dogs yet again.

Only Dean Koontz would romanticize dog poop. Disgusting. Ugh. My quest to revisit the "classics" of Koontz that I enjoyed in my earlier years makes me realize that most of my memories of reading them were rose-tinted, and I've found much better stuff to read since.

Dean Koontz is insane. "Wealthy enough to deserve [Odd Thomas'] respect?" As if people aren't deserving of respect unless they're rich? I'm no socialist anti-1% extremist by any means, but this is disgusting.

Having to listen to/read about Dean Koontz glorifying doomsday anarchists who live in bunkers full of assault weapons is nauseating. I'm not saying I have any great love of big government, but one extreme is just as bad as the other. This series is getting WAY TOO POLITICAL. My rating continues to drop for that fact alone.

I'm enjoying this one quite a bit, but jeez - Dean Koontz passed "cynic" about twenty thousand miles ago, and he's in "militiaman holed up in a doomsday bunker with a pretty tinfoil hat" territory now. Enough with the politics and the über pessimistic view or society. It's enough to make me want to put down a story I'm otherwise enjoying.

What would be interesting is a misbehaving dog or any dog that isn't a perfect beautiful wovewy angel...I love you Mr. Koontz, but you idolize dogs too much while bemoaning how evil humanity is. As I've said before, I get it, I understand the comparison, but again...overkill!!
