While there are many good reasons to like this book, the writing is grating when it comes to ecclesiastical matters. Reading it feels like being kicked in the shins by someone who is begrudged enough to do so but too timid to explains what's up or at least start a proper fistfight.

"Dr. Yamai’s credibility came dangerously close to collapsing, to be sure, but he resuscitated it with great skill, blowing cigar smoke rings in a lordly manner. Hanzaburō’s resurrection, he insisted, was a mystery of nature that transcended the powers of medicine. Which is to say, he restored his own personal credibility by sacrificing that of the medical profession."

"I was given understanding of what it is for a soul to be in mortal sin. It amounts to clouding this mirror with mist and leaving it black; and thus this Lord cannot be revealed or seen, even though He is always present giving us being. And I understood that heresies amount to breaking the mirror; which is much worse than its being darkened."

Sendero Luminoso alone seems to have executed more scientists in its first years than the Church in its entire history.
