A beautiful and meandering mess. The book is filled with fascinating ideas, but it’s too self indulgent to explore them in an interesting way. It has more in common with a bloated , onanistic writer like Gaddis than anything from the fantasy genre.

Despite the book’s flaws there are fun things about it; the persistent unlucky ness of the band’s bard (recycled though the gag is), the destructiveness of the band, leaving every establishment and vehicle they enter in a smoldering heap behind them, the running bit about Moog’s belief in the mythical owlbear.

Boilerplate fantasy fare with a bunch of rock and roll references thrown in. The story is told so episodically it seems desperate to be made into a television show. I wish it concentrated on being a book first. New characters are introduced almost every chapter and then abandoned. There is little character development and the book feels a bit predictable. Still, it's fun and very readable.

The characters are thin, the world is not built beyond the palace (and even the palace is underdeveloped) , and the rules of the god’s powers keep changing. I’m less than impressed.

This book is silly.
