This book is so ridiculously well written. The payoffs are insane - so many moments where I found myself wanting to cheer loudly.

The payoffs are insane in this one. Prior to this book I liked the series but I had felt slightly underwhelmed - mostly due to the weight of expectations this series carries, thanks to the hype surrounding it. But this book is living up to the hype and now I’m seeing why people think this is one of the greatest fantasy series ever written.

Wow what an epic chapter. Almost every character is amazing! Not sure how John Gwynne managed to do it while writing a story of so many characters. This most recent chapter is where Veradis shines in a way I haven’t seen before.

This is definitely very uneven in terms of quality. The world and mystery is mind blowing, maybe top 3 ever read. On the other hand, this really needs serious editing - there were situations where the entire chapter keeps describing something that could be done in 2-3 paragraphs and not lose the essence of what’s being communicated. This aspect breaks immersion quite a bit but the good parts make you continue.

In terms of story, this book is like 4-5 different books together. There were so many parts where I was feeling like the book isn’t that interesting, but then the book picks up again. While the quality is inconsistent, you can still see that this is a Er Gen novel. The mystery around Su Ming is wild and last few chapters are beyond insane, reminding me of dragonmount prologue in The Wheel of Time.

The translation is passable, the mystery surrounding the world is insane, the powers and fights are brilliant, and the exploration of dao is profound.

I have no idea where I am in this volume. But this story is honestly so good. I feel Er Gen uses common tropes in a lot of his stories but the stories themselves always have really unique/fantastical elements I’ve never encountered anywhere else. I was not impressed with the first volume but this has gotten really good. The protagonist is really unique and the intrigue around him is really deep.

The novel isn’t slow by any means but continuous change of pov gets exhausting

This book is so much fun to read. It’s pretty similar to stuff I’ve read before but new in its own way.

The story has now reached a fever pitch.

This is a really interesting book once you have a basic understanding of the world and the setting. There are elements of progression fantasy which are really fun as well. The magic system is fleshed out well as well. It also reminds me of the time I read Eragon which was probably my first real epic fantasy (and I have lot of fond memories of).

The writing style is not the strongest suite and the dialogue is ok but the story is captivating!

It seems that with all the work keeping me so busy, manga is what I’m mostly reading. It helps a lot that manga is generally very well written/drawn. Will try to get back to regular reading soon.

This book is interesting. A refreshing change after the last two books which I didn’t like.
