I already had a slightly-more-than-rough understanding of quantum theory, but had only a tertiary conceptualization of quarks and antiparticles. Not that I am by any means an expert, now, being only a third of the way through the book, but even just Hawking's brief mention of such particles at this point causes both fascination and an intense yearning for more knowledge on the matter.
