DNF. Actually, didn't really start. I tried, but I just couldn't deal with the daytime soapiness of it all. Kids in school and housewives making friends. YAWN. Maybe it's get better further in but I don't have enough of the patience and trust required to get there. Also, I picked it up straight after Marlon James' Black Leopard Red Wolf, which granted, wouldn't have helped.

I've been tricked. I thought I would be reading a "independent and quirky woman solves Victorian supernatural crimes and her sidekick is a gay vampire" book, but it's more like "independent and quirky woman is mixed up in Victorian Supernatural crimes, but is sort of too busy having mixed feelings about the resident gruff hunk to solve them" book instead. Worse still, I'm actually enjoying it. Damn it.

Ok, look this is basically Murder Hogwarts. Which I have been 1000% ok with but I'm at the 3/4 done point and I really could do with a lot less Plotting School Girls right now.

I cannot read the words fast enough, not because I'm trying to get it over with but because it's seriously so fricking GRIPPING. The whole hunt for the godstone thing is almost incidental to how great every single character is and how edge-of-the-seat, nail-bitingly stressful things are getting for each of them.

Hmm. So the hero's (I assume he's the hero) 13 year old sister is now basically breaking down his list of suspects? I get there might be a reason she needs to stay in the story. I get that she's precocious and mature for her age. But it's having the effect of making the hero look a bit dim. I guess I'll hang in there though and maybe he'll become clever later.

I just realized why I keep reading a few pages and then putting this excellent book down - I'm convinced Gil is going to end up dead and when that happens I am going to be very, very unhappy and I am totally trying to delay the inevitable...

Having so much trouble getting into this because what the hell? What about the virtual cliffhanger at the end of the previous book?!? Not happy.

Well, hell. Scott Lynch starts interesting, then gets better THEN gets brilliant! I am so very enjoying this book!

I'm struggling a bit with this and I'm a little disappointed about that. I guess I expected it to be awesome and it's just ok.

I swear to God if there isn't a satisfying resolution to the personal issues between John and Jamie, I am never reading another Lord John Grey book T__T

Bowden needs a better editor because "We didn't even give them the dignity of breathing their last breath with dignity." should never have been let through. Of course, I blame Bowden for writing it in the first place.

I'm about half way through and I've gotten to the point (which only seems to happen with Parker books) where I've passed the effort crest and now I can barely think about anything else and all I want to do is read. Great stuff. Droll, witty, dry and yet intensely passionate under the deceptively calm surface. I adore Parker's focal characters - they're always so unbelievably screwed up in the most unexpected ways.

There's no possibility of leaving a quote from this book. It's so dazzlingly, impeccably written I'd be forced to quote the entire thing. Cannot put it down!

I have no idea when the real action is going to start in this book. It's a very slow boil. But surprisingly that doesn't seem to matter. Gabaldon's writing is excellent, and Grey is one of the most engaging characters I think I've ever read. I am totally loving this read so far!

Things that I love about this book so far - the characterisations, the tone, the narrator, the self image issues the narrator is having and how it's nice to see someone other than girls being depressed that they're not thinner or prettier or good enough for the handsome hero, the way the handsome hero is part handsome hero and part dork. Things that I don't like about this book so far - nothing!

I know it's not *that* kind of book, but I really want Gil to find a nice fellow and get spectacularly well laid. Failing that, it'd be nice if he just got a break.

I just realized that I read 15 pages of what amounts to political backstory, and wasn't at any point bored. McGee is such an engaging character writer!!
